Mismatch: word class : adverb/noun

In Spanish, there are adverbs which behave morphologically as plural o-stem nouns. Compare the forms of the adverb lejos 'far' with those of th noun libro 'book':

singular plural singular diminutive plural diminutive
libro libro-s libr-it-o libr-it-o-s 'book'
lej-o-s lej-it-o-s 'far'
(Bermúdez-Otero, forthcoming)

The position of the diminutive suffix -it- in lejitos shows that, morphologically, -o- and -s are separable elements that are treated in the same way as the corresponding segments in the noun. Note that this contrasts with the behaviour of nouns where a final -Vs sequence is treated as part of the stem:

singular plural singular diminutive plural diminutive
virus virus virus-it-o virus-it-o-s
'book' 'books' 'little book' 'little books'
(Bermúdez-Otero, forthcoming)
