Mismatch: morphosyntax: reflexive
The refelxive suffix -at ~ -add' (1SG) has two functions:
• with stative-inchoative roots (≈ adjectives) it yields inchoatives:
inníi | gudd-át-é |
he | big-REFL-PST |
'He grew up.' | |
(p. 170) |
• with action roots (≈ verbs) it yields reflexives (indicating that 'the action takes place on behalf of the subject, and very commonly that the subject is intimately connected with the object' (p. 170)):
húcc'úu | bit-ádd'-é |
clothes | buy-1SG.REFL-PST |
'I bought myself clothes.'
(p. 170) |
Some verbs (e.g. 'ask', 'fear', 'eat', 'love', 'forget', 'slip', 'fail') appear to have the suffix -at ~ -add' , with its attendant morphophonological peculiarities, but differ from normal reflexives in three respects (pp. 171-172):
• There is no corresponding form without this suffix.
• They allow a passive suffix, which normal reflexive verbs do not:
gaafíin | ná | gaaf-at-am-t-é |
question.NOM | me | ask-REFL-PASS-F-PST |
'A question was asked of me.'
(p. 172) |
• They occur with the reciprocal pronoun wali, which otherwise does not occur with reflexives:
isáan | wál | nya-at-an |
question.NOM | RECP | eat-REFL-PL |
'They ate each other up.'
(p. 172) |
