Zulu(Niger-Congo, Bantoid)

Mismatch: morphosyntax: applicative

The applicative is regularly formed through the addition of the suffix -la, e.g. hlala 'wait' ~ hlalela 'wait for' (p. 132).

Doke (p.143) writes

There are in Zulu many stems of more than 2 syllables which have the applied termination, but are not clearly connected with more simple forms, and do not indicate applied function.

Some examples:

zingela 'hunt'
saɓela 'answer a call'
lalela 'obey'
thekela 'sponge for food'
sekela 'prop up' (= seka, with the same meaning)
sondela 'approach'
jwayela 'be accustomed'
thandela 'wind round' (n.b. it has an applicative form thandelela)
(p. 143)
