Syllables are the universal building blocks of language, binding vowels and consonants into larger units, which can be combined into words and phrases, and further into speech and song. However, while all languages have syllables, each language does syllables differently: some permit only very simple syllable shapes consisting of a consonant and a vowel, while others allow complex clusters of consonants. What determines which different shapes can occur in a language? How does that play out in the lexicon and grammar of the language? How did the diversity in shapes across different languages come about?
