MA funding opportunities

Although we do not currently offer an MA, MSc or MRes in Linguistics in the School of English and Languages, a four-year funding scheme (known as 1+3 studentships) is available for students wishing to undertake a one-year MA or MSc in Linguistics (at an affiliated university) and then continue on to a three-year PhD in Linguistics at the University of Surrey.

The scheme is run as part of the Southeast Network for Social Science (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership. The affiliated universities where you can undertake Masters study are:

  • University of East Anglia
  • University of Essex
  • University of Kent
  • University of Reading

SeNSS scholarships support linguistic research in areas of computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and interdisciplinary social science research involving linguistics. They also fund research into phonetics and applied linguistics relating to these areas. As such, applicants for this scheme must devise a PhD research project that is relevant to one of these fields.

SeNSS 1+3 Studentships (maintenance and fees for 4 years for full-time students) are available for UK and International students.

This studentship competition involves a selection process. If you are interested in this scheme, please get in touch with the SMG PhD Coordinator Oliver Bond to discuss your application in more detail.

Important deadlines for entry:

  • Contact SMG PhD Coordinator Oliver Bond as soon as possible to discuss the application process.
  • Your initial application will need to be submitted in December.
  • Your funding application will need to be submitted in January.
